Warwick petition should lead to full debate

St Mary’s Lands campaigner Nigel Hamilton has so far collected 754 signatures on a paper petition plus another 453 online names with the intent of triggering a council debate on the future of the old common.

The biggest tenant of the land is, of course, Warwick Racecourse.

But the football club, Racing Club Warwick, and the girls’ marching band, also have a stake in the site where disputes are still simmering about a redundant Ministry of Defence drill hall.

Mr Hamilton lives close to the land and has become an outspoken critic of the way it is being managed by the district council.

He recently found information about how council officers had considered selling the site to The Jockey Club.

The council has since pointed out their meetings were not in secret but not publicised widely because the management plans suggested by The Jockey Club were not proceeded with.
