Pc Byrne, who has been with Warwickshire Police for seven years, said: “It was just shocking.

“You don’t expect to go to work and not clock back out, they attended what they thought was a routine call and it was all set up.

“ Every officer’s thoughts went out to them and their families at the time and this is our way of doing something for the cause.”

The challenge started on December 1 with the officers taking part, 12 of whom are from Rugby, four from Nuneaton and the rest from Leamington, running between two and four miles a day.

Pc Byrne said: “It’s a great way of keeping fit and it’s really bringing the shift together.”

The Pc Nicola Hughes Memorial Fund was set up by her father Bryn who is running the North Pole marathon to raise money for the cause.

The fund’s aim is to create a lasting legacy in Pc Hughes’ name by helping children who have lost a parent through a criminal act.
