Warwickshire Police send bikes to African farmers

Small scale farmers and traders in Zambia will benefit from a donation of bicycles by Warwickshire Police.

The force has sent 12 bicycles that have been found or seized to the African country, through the charity Re-Cycle, which repairs donated bikes and sends them to countries on the African continent.

The charity also works with companies and individuals in Africa who can teach repair and maintenance skills to those who receive the bikes so they can keep them in a good condition.

Neil Hewison, judicial services manager at Warwickshire Police, said: “We are delighted to support the valuable work of Re-Cycle in supporting individuals and communities in the UK and Africa.

“As a force we are committed to supporting charitable efforts wherever we can.”

Derek Balcombe, Re-Cycle’s operations manager, said: “The bikes have now been sent to Zambia, where they will be used to help improve the lives of subsistence farmers in rural areas.

“They will provide a low cost and sustainable means of transporting produce to market and save people many hours of walking each day.”

Re-Cycle provides a means of sustainable travel for people living in poverty in Ghana, Namibia, South Africa, Malawi, Zambia and Kenya. To find out more about the charity, visit www.re-cycle.org
