Warwickshire’s BIKE team to crack down on arson and other crime

The county council, which runs the fire and rescue service, is working with Warwickshire Police on a Bicycle Intervention Knowledge and Education (BIKE) team - where those involved are able to reach, by mountain bike, areas that have become known for high levels of anti-social behaviour and arson.

New recruits who have been training recently include firefighters, an arson reduction officer, police community support officers, police officers and a sergeant.

The course, funded by Warwickshire’s Police Commissioner Ron Ball, was run by the county council’s cycle training provider, Love2Bike, and involved a cycling theory course, specialist youth engagement training and BIkeability’s level two and three practical test.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer Rob Moyney said: “The role of the team is to intervene in any arson or potential anti-social behaviour. They give a great visual presence in the community and act as a link for the community to pass on any information around arson and anti-social behaviour.”
