Yes, we can bake! Cake time as Leamington law firm joins campaign

THE temptations of home baked sponges, muffins and flapjacks are already being wafted before employees at Leamington firm Blythe Liggins Solicitors as they prepare for Macmillan’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning.

The family law team, which is based in Rugby Road, are so excited about being given an excuse to pick up their mixing bowls and scales that some have begun honing their baking skills extra early to make sure they have got it right in time for their event on Friday September 30.

Family lawyer Louise Sheasby, who is organising the fundraiser, said: “We had a coffee morning for Macmillan a few years ago and, as it’s such a worthwhile charity and we wanted to support it, we thought we’d do it again.

“Running a coffee morning is something we felt we were all capable of doing. It isn’t hard to bake a cake or biscuits or even buy something. But the end result will hopefully be that we raise a good amount of money.

“We have some excellent cake bakers here - and some people are already starting to bring treats in as they experiment with their baking! We will worry about our calorie intake on Saturday September 31.”

Solicitors from the firm have in the past cycled across South America to raise funds for Macmillan, which is aiming to raise £8.5 million nationally during this year’s campaign - all of which will be spent on providing care to cancer patients and their families.

Andrew Brooks, head of the family lawyer department, said: “It’s a great event which has really inspired the firm. One of our secretaries, Verity Rivers, is something of an amateur baker and has even invested in a device to squirt jam into fairy cakes.”

He added: “I’ve been paying particular attention to television food programmes of late and hope to equally impress the staff with my culinary skills.”
