Young driver safety talks could ‘help save lives’

MORE than 100 Leamington students have been given expert advice on how to be safe behind the wheel, thanks to a scheme run by a police community officer based in the town.

Pcso Sharron Underwood presented 120 young people, who are part of the Land Rover group on Warwickshire College’s engineering course, with her talk on ‘young driver safety’ at the college’s Trident centre. The group was mostly made up of young men - Pcso Underwood’s target audience.

She said: “There is a wealth of research and casualty data showing that young drivers - particularly young male drivers - are at a much higher risk of crashing than older, more experienced male drivers.

“They are therefore more at risk of losing their lives or being seriously injured on the road, often killing or injuring their young passengers or other road users.

“The presentations are aimed at helping young people save their own lives on roads.”
