Your guide to remembrance services around Warwick and Leamington

WARWICKSHIRE people will be gathering to pay their respects to servicemen and women who have fought and died for their country.

Remembrance services in south Warwickshire are taking place at the following times and locations:

• On Sunday November 13, Leamington parish chaplain the Rev Jonathan Jee will be joined by members of military associations, Scouts, Girl Guides and Cadets for a parade beginning at Regent Street at 10.40am. The parade will move to the War Memorial at Euston Place, where standards and wreaths will be laid.

Dignitaries including Warwick and Leamington MP Chris White and town mayor Cllr Alan Wilkinson will carry a mace and ceremonial sword from the town hall to the memorial, before the service, conducted by Mr Jee. There will be a two-minute silence at 11am and the service will then resume. After a blessing, all detachments will be called to attention before they depart from the memorial.

• Remembrance events in Warwick begin today (Saturday), when the town’s branch of the Royal British Legion will hold a service at the cemetery in Birmingham Road (canal entrance), where there is a stone dedicated to the branch. The service, which begins at 10.45am, is open to non-members.

On Friday November 11, a short service will take place at the war memorial in Church Street at 10.45am.

And on Sunday November 13, Warwick’s main remembrance service begins at St Mary’s church at 10am, followed by a parade of military units and other organisations to the war memorial.

A two-minute silence and a second service will take place at 10.45am. A salute will be taken by the Lord Lieutenant and then a reception will be held at the Court House in Jury House.

Town mayor Cllr Trudy Offer and town councillors will be attending all of Sunday’s events.

• Southam’s remembrance day service will be held at St James’ church on Sunday November 13 at 10.45am, following after a parade through the town which will leave Wood Street car park at 10.30am.

• In Kenilworth, people can attend a dedication of the garden of remembrance at the war memorial on Abbey Hill today (Saturday) at 10.55am.

On Friday November 11 there will be a two-minute silence at the memorial at 10.55am and on Sunday November 13, a remembrance service, also at the memorial, at 10.45am.

• The Royal British Legion’s Leamington branch launched its poppy appeal at the Royal Priors on Saturday. Volunteers are running the appeal from a Poppy Shop in the Parade, which will be open every day until Monday November 12 from 10am to 4pm.

Poppies are also available in shops around the town and from a stand in the upper mall of the Royal Priors shopping centre.

Proceeds will go towards supporting serving and former servicemen and women and their families.
