In the face of the virus crisis and government guidance on social distancing, official events are postponed for commemoration of VE Day 75 years.

But that does not mean that people can’t pay their tributes by raising a glass to war heroes at 3pm on Friday.

Lest we forget

We also aim to commemorate this moving occasion.

Our head of community content Neil Pickford said: “As a tried, tested and trusted source of information, and longstanding community supporter throughout wars, peace and the current battle with coronavirus, we encourage our readers to join us in raising a glass at 3pm on Friday May 8 to toast a tribute to all our heroes, past and present, albeit from safety of their own homes rather than packed pubs, clubs and street parties.”

To coincide with the playing of When the Battle’s O’er, in association with VE Day 75, English Heritage, British Beer and Pub Association and its members are asking us to remember all our heroes.People are being urged to do this with those they live with even though we are all isolated.

Commemoration still goes ahead

Thousands of pubs and historic sites across the United Kingdom, Channel Islands and Isle of Man were due to encourage their customers to raise a glass at the appointed hour to take part in The Nation’s Toast to the Heroes of the Second World War.

The Beer and Pub Association initiative would have been a chance for the customers of more than 20,000 UK pubs, and many thousands of visitors to English Heritage sites around the country, to remember the sacrifice of those who died or were wounded.

They urge us to still undertake the Nation’s Toast to the Heroes of the Second World War at 3pm on May 8 from the safety of our own homes by standing up to raise a glass.

British Beer and Pub Association asks you to undertake the following toast ... “To those who gave so much, we thank you.”

And we urge you to pay tribute to the millions at home and abroad that gave so much to ensure we all enjoy and share the freedom we have today.
