You could be able to use Netflix for just £3 per month - here's how

The popular streaming service Netflix is reportedly trialling a new price plan that is cheaper than its current basic package.

However it would only be available for mobile devices like smartphones and tablets - but could cost as little as £2.99 a month. This is substantially cheaper than the £5.99 per month basic package or the £8.99 per month standard package.

Commuters and children

The new mobile price plan aims to target commuters or children who prefer to access their favourite programmes on the go.

Netflix trialled its mobile plan in Malaysia, India and Indonesia at the end of last year. For the case of these countries where more people own a smartphone than a TV, the mobile plan was a more attractive option.

Plans to introduce worldwide

If the trials are successful, Netflix could launch the plan worldwide.

Netflix said, "In Q4, we launched a mobile-only plan in Malaysia and Indonesia (which we introduced to India in Q3 last year). We’ve seen similar results with this plan driving incremental subscriber growth and improving retention.

"We expect the mobile-only plan to be revenue-positive which will allow us to further invest in content to be enjoyed by our members and continue to feed the virtuous cycle.”

“We plan to continue to test adding this plan, as well as additional ideas in other countries around the world."

The only drawback is that the mobile plan only offers viewing in standard definition, but at £2.99 a month this may seem like a minor inconvenience.
