Free dementia safeguarding scheme launched in Royal Leamington Spa.
MedicAlert UK is proud to announce the launch of the Herbert Protocol safeguarding scheme, supported by the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC), for people living with dementia and their families. Already adopted by neighbouring police forces in regions such as Thames Valley and London, the scheme is available at www.herbertprotocol.com, offering families a free and practical way to help protect loved ones living with dementia.
This initiative allows families and carers to complete and securely store a Herbert Protocol form within the MedicAlert emergency service database. The protocol provides essential information such as a person’s medical conditions, daily routines and places of significance - crucial details that can help police locate someone quickly if they are reported missing.
The scheme is named after George Herbert, a Normandy veteran who inspired the protocol after going missing while living with dementia. His story has since shaped a nationwide safeguarding approach, now enhanced by this service by MedicAlert UK and supported by the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC).
- Locally available: All residents in Warwickshire have access to this safeguarding programme.
- Backed nationally: Supported by the NPCC, the Herbert Protocol is part of a coordinated national effort to help safeguard people living with dementia.
- Free and accessible: Residents can create a secure profile and upload their completed Herbert Protocol form without any cost.
- Tailored support: The website offers simple instructions and helpful advice for completing the form.
Across the UK, almost 1 million people are living with dementia, and approximately 40,000 are reported missing for the first time each year. 70% of people with dementia will go missing at least once. These statistics underscore the urgent need for proactive measures like the Herbert Protocol - especially in communities like Royal Leamington Spa, where dementia support services play a vital role in public health.

This free resource empowers families and supports the fast, coordinated efforts of our local emergency services. It's a practical step that offers peace of mind and improves safety for those most at risk."
MedicAlert UK is encouraging families, carers and anyone affected by dementia in the Royal Leamington Spa area to visit www.herbertprotocol.com to create a free profile and store their Herbert Protocol securely. It could make all the difference in an emergency situation.
