Guppy, who helped form the league in 1979 with the aim of introducing children to running and improving the Mid-Warwickshire team, said the series of races are still as relevant today as they were when it began.

He said: “The main pleasure is seeing the effort the children put into their running, getting them to realise that with a little bit of training they can improve, watching this improvement race by race and hearing from teachers how much difference it can sometimes make to their attitude and self-esteem back in school.

“The support from the schools has been superb over the years. We regularly have 28 schools enter the league, as this year.”

The league will continue next year under the guidance of Tom Sidwell and members of the ON Side team, along with some current helpers including Dai Vaughan, who has also been involved since the start.
