The competition is open to teams that either play for a club in the CV34 postcode or live in the CV34 area and, after weeks of warm, sunny weather, rain arrived less that an hour into the finals day and continued for most of the afternoon.

However, Leamington ignored the downpours to overcome Whitnash in a hard-fought semi-final, before beating Warwickshire County Council in the final.

Leamington actually lost 11-7 on ends in their last-four clash with Whitnash, but Dick Allibon’s rink made their ends count to sneak through 19-18.

WCC Staff earned their place in the final with a 19-4 success against their second string.

Barry Grant’s team won 12 of the 16 ends, with a five on the tenth end underlining their superiority and forcing the 2nds to concede on the 16th end.

Following a break for lunch and with heavy rain still falling, a discussion took place between WBC bowls section captain John Labrum, umpire Lyn Taylor and the finalists, with all agreeing that play should resume on time.

The result was a nail-biting final in which Staff got off to a flier, Grant’s triple opening up a six-shot lead after the first three ends.

Leamington halved the deficit over the next two ends and by the tenth, the teams were back at level pegging.

The rain stopped by the 14th end with the score tied at 10-10 and Leamington revelled in the drying conditions, reeling off the last four ends for a 16-10 success.

The day ended with afternoon tea in the company of Cllr Bob Dhillon, mayor of Warwick, who presented the winner’s trophy to skip Allibon, Bernard Rose and Janet Allibon.
