Beaton and Heydon both make last eight in Players’ Championship

Steve Beaton put the disappointment of missing out on qualification for the World Grand Prix behind him with a run to the quarter-final of the Players’ Championship in Dublin last Sunday.

Beaton, who was knocked out in the last 16 the previous day, beat Adam Smith-Neale, Ian White and Shaun Griffiths before losing 6-4 in the quarter-final to Justin Pipe.

Pipe went on to win his first professional tournament, beating Phil Taylor 6-5 in the final.

Beaton said: “Well done to Justin, he’s a great bloke and I hope he enjoys his win.”

Beaton’s impressive recent form has seen him guarantee his place in The Grand Slam of Darts to be held in Wolverhampton next month.

Nigel Heydon, meanwhile, reached the Players’ Championship quarter-final on Saturday.

Heydon saw off the challenge of Barrie Bates, Co Stompe, Simon Whitlock and Alan Tabern before Mervyn King avenged the previous week’s defeat to the Undertaker with a 6-3 success in the last eight.

The Lillington thrower was knocked out in the fourth round on Sunday by Jamie Caven.
