Beaton chases Grand Slam repeat

Steve Beaton faces Paul Nicholson tomorrow night (Friday) in the second round of the Grand Slam of Darts after coming through a tough group in Wolverhampton.

Beaton beat Mervyn King in his opening match before losing 5-3 to top seed Phil Taylor.

He bounced back to beat teenager James Hubbard and now has his sights set on matching his 2010 semi-final appearance.

“I had a fantastic run last year which included victories over Ted Hanley and Phil Taylor,” said Beaton. “I would love to do something similar again this year.”

Nigel Heydon bowed out on Tuesday night after a 5-3 defeat to Brendan Dolan.

Heydon had got his campaign off the perfect start with a 5-3 victory over fifth seed Gary Anderson. However, defeat to Wayne Jones on Sunday left Heydon needing to beat Dolan to have a realistic chance of qualifying.

 This year’s Mayor’s Charity Cup will be held at the Sydenham Club on Saturday November 26 (8pm start).
