Dazzo is the cuts man for new gym’s official opening

Former British flyweight champion Darren ‘Dazzo’ Williams was on hand to officially open Leamington ABC’s new premises on Saturday night.

Williams, who retired in 2005, also brought his Lonsdale belt down to the club which was formerly housed at the Westbury Centre.

Months of hard work by volunteers saw the old scout hut in Mason Avenue, Lillington, transformed into the new base for the club.

The gym has been open since last June and head coach Ollie O’Neill said the move to the new premises has been a popular one.

“We’re full every night, but the task now is to find boxers as a lot of people use the gym for fitness work.

“But hopefully we’ll fit in one or two fights for our boxers before the end of this season and we’ll be ready to go next season.”

The gym is open five nights a week for boxing and keep-fit and plans to add a new Sunday boxing session.

It is also offering an ASDAN course based around boxing which allows young people to gain a qualification equivalent to three-quarters of a GCSE.
