Double date for Quartermane starts with an England call-up

On Friday, the 17-year-old lightweight represents an England Select against Ireland Select at Villa Park and the following night, he’s in action again at the Assembly Rooms in Leamington.

They will be the 16th and 17th bouts of a ring career that started a couple of years ago at Cleary’s ABC.

“Boxing two nights in a row is tough,” said coach Edwin Cleary, “but that’s what happens in international tournaments and that’s Dan’s target.”

Although Friday night’s bout at Villa Park is not a full international, there’s a chance that recognition will come.

Quartermane impressed at a recent open day held by the Great Britain coaches in Sheffield and has been invited back for a further training session on Sunday, November 9.

The move away from computer scoring in amateur boxing will suit Quartermane.

He doesn’t throw single punches for the computers, he throws lots of punches to hurt his opponents.

“Natural aggression,” is Quartermane’s biggest attribute, according to Cleary, and he added: “Dan’s in the gym six days a week and he listens and learns.

“Because he’s so fit, strong and aggressive, he’s been able to compete with guys who have been boxing a lot longer.”

Last season, Quartermane raised a few eyebrows by reaching the quarter-finals of the Junior ABA championships and he was a one-round winner for England Select against Wales Select in June.

Fifteen-year-old Lewis Williams also enjoyed a good season in 2013-14 and he’s matched with Jamie Aramayo (Phoenix Fire) in Leamington on Saturday.

Aramayo was beaten in last year’s Junior ABA final and Cleary said: “I’m told he has a lot of skill, but Lewis has an equaliser in both hands.”

In the professional ring, Warwick middleweight Mike Byles, who captured the British Masters Bronze title last month, extended his winning run to four fights in Bedworth.

Byles was matched against Jamie Gelder and ended the Dudley boxer’s unbeaten run with a six-round points win.

Gelder is a tall, skilled boxer but Byles was too strong.

The referee docked Gelder points for holding in both the third and sixth rounds and Byles won by a 58-55 margin on the referee’s scorecard.

Next for Byles is a rematch with Ben Davies in a title defence in Barnsley on Saturday, November 29.
