demolished Oliver Cassidy (Tamworth ABC) to move into the Midlands final of the ABA Elite Youth Championships.

Despite giving away nearly half a stone to his opponent, novice Quartermaine belied his inexperience to comprehensively outbox the former Midlands champion.

Quartermaine opened up with multiple combinations to set the tone for the fight, with Cassidy, who has boxed for Great Britain, resorting to holding, head locks and falling over in order to stem the tide.

The Cleary’s ABC boxer maintained his workrate through the second and third rounds to leave the judges with a simple decision to make and coach Edwin Cleary said he was surprised by the ease of Quartermaine’s victory.

“It was the easiest bout he’s had,” said Cleary. “The other guy was wearing a Midlands vest but he didn’t want to know after the opening 30 seconds - he was just spoiling.

“At the moment, Dan is the most exciting fighter we’ve got at the gym.

“This is an elite competition rather than a novice so if Dan goes on to win it - which I believe he can - it will be the gym’s biggest accomplishment.”

Quartermaine now goes on to box Irfan Ali from Birmingham ABC in Digbeth on Sunday.

The two have met before, with Ali gaining the decision, but Cleary believes the longer format will play to Quartermaine’s strengths.

“I thought he had won the last fight. But the move to three-minute rounds should suit Danny.”
