A raucous crowd greeted the opening Cleary’s show of the season at the Assembly and they were rewarded with two championship belts for home boxers, writes Paul Okey.

Danny Quartermaine was clearly the main attraction, with those chanting his name lifting him to a points victory over Far Cotton’s Morgan Bosley in the second defence of his CEB Youth Lightweight Championship Belt.

Bosley arrived in Leamington with a decent reputation on the back of 29 wins, but Quartermaine held all the aces and despite a late flurry from the challenger, claimed a unanimous decision.

Lewis Williams defied a significant weight disadvantage to win the CEB Youth Heavyweight Championship with a split-decision victory over Coree Clarke.

Tri-Nations Youth Heavyweight champion Clarke was held at arm’s length by 16-year-old Williams who scored repeatedly with his jab before upping his work rate in the final round.

“He’s very annoying,” said coach Edwin Cleary of Williams. “He makes an easy job look hard.

“But you’d never guess there was nearly a stone-and-a-half between them and Clarke is Tri-Nations champions so it’s a good scalp for Lewis.”

Liam Timms was unable to make it a hat-trick of championship belts for Cleary’s boxers after finding Merridale’s Nathan Samuels too strong in his CEB Novice Middleweight bout.

There was little between the two boxers, but Samuels’ greater ringcraft saw him get the nod once the action had finally come to a halt, with neither the boxers nor the referee hearing the final bell amid the din.

The night kicked off with a skills bout which pitted Cleary’s stablemates Jordan Kendall and William Gillies together in a 40kg contest in which both youngsters showed fine potential.

Morgan Ensell then claimed a debut success against the game Caitlin Cromie from Cwmgas Police ABC.

There were mixed fortunes for brothers Joshua and Jake Finch, with Joshua beating Birmingham City ABC’s Jack Byrne on a split decision and Jake suffering a points defeat against the elusive Ryan Tyrer (Donnington).

Cleary’s Jay Hill then brought the first half to a close with an explosive contest against Foleshill’s David Silwa.

Debutant Hill, 22, edged an all-action first round, but a lack of stamina caught up with him and the referee called a halt to proceedings in the third.

The evening featured two more championship bouts with the fight of the night seeing Hall Green’s Connor Fanning outpoint Grant Attwood (Worcester City) to claim the CEB Youth Welterweight crown after three pulsating rounds.

A CEB Elite Middleweight Championship bout brought the curtain down on proceedings with Empire’s Jordan Cameron outpointing the highly rated Jordan Thompson (Jewellery Quarter).
