Cleary’s ABC boxers filled one side of the 13-bout card, with Jordan Kendall, Liam Muir and Dean Mancini kicking proceedings off with skills bouts.

For ten-year-old Kendall it was his fourth and last skills bout and he will now have to to wait until he turns 11 for his next outing.

Hargobind Nijjar claimed a convincing victory over Birmingham Irish’s James Finnegan to start a run of junior wins for the host club, with Lewis Williams, Rheece Cleary and Danny Quartermaine all turning on the style to the delight of Edwin Cleary.

“The story of the day is that the future of the gym looks secure,” said Cleary.

“The juniors looked outstanding and all the kids will go into the summer on a high.”

It was not such a successful afternoon for the gym’s senior boxers, with only Wali Jan Khan claiming a victory to boost his confidence ahead of a move into the pro game next season.

Nav Singh Manku suffered a majority defeat to intermediate boxer Ash Tallegani (Studio ABC), while Sam Newey was ahead when he was disaqualified for dropping his head too low against St George’s ABC’s Mark Underwood.

Mike Cole suffered a narrow reverse at the hands of Studio ABC’s Jordan Thompson and Myles Vale stepped straight off the plane to lose to 148-fight veteran Michael Pardoe (Droitwich ABC) in a bout Cleary described as “a war”.

However, Cleary was unmoved by the defeats, many of which he felt could have gone either way.

“I’m not worrried for the senior guys,” he said. “Many of them were heavily matched against much more experienced opponents but that’s the only way they will better themselves.”
