Tonks picks up all the accolades at Jackie Turpin ABC show

For in addition to picking up a trophy for his unanimous points win over Kettering boxer Dale Sanderson, the 13-year-old went away with the Jackie Turpin Memorial Cup for the best local fighter on the show and the Betty Turpin Memorial Cup.

Thankfully, Tonks had some help from Jackie Turpin stablemate Mark Edwards with whom he shared the Betty Turpin award, given to the club’s most improved boxer.

Tonks’ success, which saw his opponent given a standing count in the third, was a rare highlight for the host club on a night which sparked without ever fully igniting.

Edwards struggled against the superior height and reach advantage of Kettering ABC’s Ben Wortley, going down to a unanimous points defeat, while there were early conclusions to the contests of both Liberty Durrant and Bryan Deer.

Durrant picked up a bloodied nose early in his 67kg fight against Romario McIntosh (Priory Park) with the referee halting the bout mid-way through the second round.

Deer, meanwhile, went down under a barrage from Exhall ABC’s Morgan McGhee and was clearly in no fit state to continue despite just beating the count.

There were mixed fortunes, too, for the Cleary’s ABC boxers on the card.

Rheece Cleary showed he is ready to step up from skills bouts after using his superior reach advantage to expertly pick off Callum Farden (Kettering ABC) in a one-sided concounter.

Dan Quartermaine, however, can count himself unfortunate not to have got the decision against Capitol’s Jacob Alleyne.

There looked little between the two boxers in the opening skirmishes, but as the fight progressed, Quartermaine produced the more impressive firepower and it was a major surprise when Alleyne’s arm was raised.

Sean Greenfield again showed his class to take a comfortable points decision over Jon Roberts (Worcester City).

Roberts came into the fight with a decent pedigree and took the fight to his opponent in the opening round.

Greenfield, for his part, was slow to get into his stride and it was only in the closing stages of the second round that he began to up his workrate and find his range.

The Cleary’s boxer then controlled the final round, with Roberts’ cause not helped by the deduction of two points for holding as he desperately looked for some respite.

In the night’s other bouts, Ashley Makh (Coventry) outpointed Bedworth’s David Sweeney, Joshua Nelson (Palmers Boxing Academy) comfortably beat Red Corner’s Charlie Bradley, Brian Simpson (Palmers Boxing Academy) gained a narrow verdict over Michael Green (Red Corner ABC) and Reece Constable-Williams (Exhall ABC) claimed a majority decision over Coventry Boys’ Gino Jones.

Jackie Turpin ABC are now looking ahead to their next show, which will be held in May.
