In one of two curtain-raisers to the Royal Navy show, 15-year-old Lewis Williams stunned the capacity crowd with a first-round stoppage win over England and Tri-Nations champion Kenan Brown Wingfield (Sileby ABC).

Williams, who at 6ft 4in is already being tipped to make a splash in the heavyweight scene, dropped his vastly more experienced opponent with a short right and despite Wingfield making the count, the referee decided he was unfit to continue.

And in the final bout of the evening, adopted Leamingtonian Ryan Fuller (Vulcan ABC) proved too strong for the Royal Navy’s Robert Evans as he continues his path to the pro game.

The doughy Evans had already picked himself up from the canvas once before a barrage of shots from the Hull man ended the contest before the close of round one.

In between, the Royal Navy had much the better of proceedings, winning eight of the remaining nine contests which followed Danny Quartermaine’s split decision victory over Hall Green’s Tom Collins.

Myles Vale was the sole victor for the Cleary’s Select team, with his trademark aggression helping him get the nod from two of the three judges in his bout against the Navy’s Aaren Meder in their 69kg contest.

Fellow Cleary’s fighters Wali Jan Khan and Nav Singh Manku were outboxed on their way to defeats against Liam Short and Lewis Dugan, respectively, while Mike Cole also went down to defeat in his clash against Elliott Larsen.

After taking the bout at an hour’s notice, Cole produced a game performance, going blow for blow at the start of frenetic final round with Larsen.

However, the fight was already lost, with Larsen having taken advantage of Cole’s low hands to repeatedly pick off his opponent.

Ricky Atwell was comfortably outpointed by the Navy’s Daniel Carey, but the Coventry University boxer can take heart from having survived some punishing shots from his opponent.

Fight fans will get one of their last opportunities to see Fuller fight as an amateur on Cleary’s Gym’s next show at the Assembly in Leamington on Friday March 21 (8pm, tickets, £11).

The super-heavyweight will then feature on the all-heavyweight show at Warwick School on Saturday May 3 before making the switch to the professional ranks.
