Cooper gets on to the podium at Nottingham Senior Grand Prix

Lillington Free Church’s Timmy Cooper excelled at the Nottingham Senior Grand Prix on Saturday.

Cooper finished second in his group in Band 4 before falling to Callum Morrison in the last 32.

However, in Band 5, the 15-year-old sauntered through his group and defeated Karl Brown in the last 32.

He then beat clubmate Sam Wiggins in the next round, accounted for James Berry in the last eight and Wales’ Marc Castro in the semi-final before losing 3-1 to Morrison to come away with the runners-up medal.

Church’s Sam Weaving, in his first Grand Prix, won his Band 6 group, beating Morgan Smith of Hampshire, Arturs Reinholds of Nottinghamshire and Yutaro Tsuji (Yorkshire) before falling to Castro in the knockout.

He qualified in second spot in Band 5 after beating Helmuth Osborne from Sussex but exited in the first knockout round to Cade Short (Wales).

Clubmate Sam Wiggins had a Band 6 group to forget but came good in Band 5, winning his four-player group easily before bowing out at the hands of Cooper in the knockouts 3-1.

Lee Dorning was the final Free Church star to enter and won his Band 6 group with victories over Steve Hirst from Kent, Josh Walshe (Lincolnshire) and Castro.

He then beat Morgan Smith to reach the quarter-
final where he lost out to 
Chun Yin Yu of Northumberland.

In Band 5 he won his group, defeating Ryan Lunn (Cheshire), Tsuji and Scott Dixon (Northamptonshire).

Wins against Smith and Samson Bekele of Surrey propelled him to his second quarter-final where he lost to Morrison.
