Coventry City are still hoping to add Brentford’s Frank Onyeka to their ranks before the transfer window closes, and Clinton Morrison believes the deal could be the final piece of the puzzle for his old club’s promotion push.

Frank Lampard’s side now have just a three-point lead at the top of the Championship following Monday night’s defeat at Norwich City, but Morrison believes the addition of the defensive midfielder could provide a boost at just the right time.

“I think they are lacking in midfield and he would help massively,” he said. “I think they've got good footballers in midfield, but they need legs and someone who can break play up and turnover quickly. Onyeka can do that.

“He's aggressive and can also keep the ball moving. He's a very clever player and you know how smart Brentford are with their recruitment; he's a good player and [can] certainly make a difference.”

The Nigerian international, who has grown disillusioned in west London due to a lack of playing time, has other admirers with both Valencia and Sheffield United said to be keen on the 28-year-old.

Coventry remain favourites to land Onyeka who would join other recent signings in the shape of Romain Esse from Crystal Palace, Min-Hyeok Yang from Tottenham, and FC Zurich winger Jahnoah Markelo.

Speaking to Free Bets, Morrison added: “They're [Coventry] definitely adding depth out wide and up top. They need fresh legs and I think Onyeka would be a smart signing.

“It's a crucial time for Coventry. The lead they had has slowly become smaller but there's still no need to panic. They have Middlesbrough in a couple of weeks, but we all know what the Championship is like!”

“Teams will take points off each other throughout the season and this won't come as a surprise to Frank Lampard; he knows what the league is like and he won't be worried yet.”
