Charities set to benefit from expansion of league

The second season of the Warwick Midweek League will see the league expand from four to six teams.

The league was set up with old-fashioned values including fair play and adherence to the spirit of cricket plus a focus on local charities.

The 2014 season raised £370 for Myton Hospice and culminated with a 20-20 Finals Day which was hosted and eventually won by Norton Lindsey and Wolverton CC.

This year, Norton Lindsey and Wolverton (Norton Wolves), The Railway Inn (Railway Loco’s), The NFU Stoneleigh CC (NFU Seasons), Warwick County Council (Warwick Mania), Leek Wootton (Wootton Warriors) and The Oak PCT (Oak PCT Raiders) will battle it out, with plans in place to keep expanding the league.

Jason Ashley, managing director of league sponsors Ashley Sports, said: “Our long-term target for the league is to grow in size every year to a maximum of 16 teams split into two divisions.

“Obviously as the league gets bigger and more cricket is played the fundraising potential increases.

“As the main sponsor, Ashley Sports is very confident that over the next five years the league will raise over £10,000 for local charities.”
