Khalid and Young share nine wickets in Leamington romp

Leamington got their Premier Division campaign back on track with a resounding eight-wicket success at Wellington.

Wellington were put into bat in ideal bowling conditions, with overhead cloud and a covered pitch offering assistance to the new-ball pairing.

Tom Warner gained reward for pitching the ball up when he had opener Steve Lamb caught in the gully.

However, this was the only success for a while as Wellington’s second wicket added 63 before Simon Khomari (30) was caught off the bowling of Jason Young.

The wicket sparked started a remarkable collapse as Young (10-2-34-4) and Faisal Khalid (14.5-3-26-5) bowled beautifully in tandem to dismiss Wellington for 141 in the 42nd over.

Only Northamptonshire player Bilal Shafayat, offered any resistance, eventually falling to Young for 36.

In reply, Michael Balac (16) got Leamington off to a positive start before Alex Phillips (36) and David Bailey put on 74 for the second wicket.

After the loss of Phillips, Tom Lewis (10 not out) joined forced with Bailey to guide Spa to their victory target, with the latter finishing unbeaten on 66.

Leamington 2nds fell an agonising five runs short of their victory target at home to Walmley.

A fine spell from Darrel Williams (15-5-38-4) helped restrict Walmley to a gettable 204 from their 50 overs.

However, despite new opener Dexter Purser providing the solidity Leamington have been lacking with an unbeaten 90, no other batsman reached 20 as the hosts closed on 200 for six.

n Leamington 3rds returned to the top of the Cotswold Hills League Division Two after securing a 32-run win from their derby clash at Warwickshire County Council Staff.

Batting first on a sluggish wicket, Leamington posted 187 for three off their 45 overs, with useful contributions from Colin Grant (58), Mark Davison (43 not out), Jimmy Gethin (26) and Rob Wollaston (23).

In reply, WCC started well, putting on 35 for the opening wicket before Rob Grant dismissed opener Potter for ten.

Gardner and Singh-Nijjar added 40 for the third wicket before Gardner was run out for 19 and, with the bowlers applying good pressure, Staff were dismissed for 155.

n Spa’s West Midlands 3rds XI Championship side maintained their fine form with a 59-run win at Attock.

Asked to bat first on a damp wick-et, Leamington batted sensibly before chaos ensued in the last few overs.

They saw six wickets tumble for one run but not before taking advantage of some indifferent bowling to close on 196, with Lewis Baker making 45, well supported by Zac Grant (30), James Cowan (31) and 41 extras.

In response, Attock made a good start as Leamington bowled too short initially. Jack Bewick took a wicket to start the rot, quickly followed by two apiece for Billy Hallett and Nathan Credington.

Attock remained ahead of the rate, however, but the introduction of Cowan and Mark Ryan brought about a swift conclusion, with the duo sharing five wickets as the hosts were bowled out for 135.

n Leamington under-15s suffered a disappointing defeat in a tight contest at Olton on Sunday.

Inserted on a slow wicket, Leamington made steady progress and were reasonably satisfied with a total of 127 for eight in 25 overs.

Raaval Bains top-scored with 29, supported by Dan Mills (22) and Stuart Budd (20).

Under pressure for the first time this season, Leamington’s seam attack held Olton in check and the hosts needed almost nine an over at one stage.

The wheels fell off, however, for Leamington with catches dropped and a number of overthrows helping Olton squeeze home with two balls remaining and three wickets in hand.
