CYCLING: 24th British title for Barrie Mitchell

Cycle race team Team Jewson—MI Racing—Polypipe—McCann won their 11th National Cycling Championship of the season on Sunday, thanks to some brilliant riding by Veteran rider Barrie Mitchell, who lives at Marton.

The Cycling Time Trials National Closed Circuit Championships took place on a very wet and windy Thruxton Motor Race circuit in Hampshire.

This was the third time Mitchell has won the 65+ National Championship in the past four years and his 24th British Championship during his long racing career. He recorded a time of 29mins 1sec for the 12-mile event.

Team mates Russell Green (Rugby) finished with a time of 28-40 and Mark Wise (Leamington Spa member) 27-58. Mick Ives was a non starter, as he was recovering from flu.

The team’s Cyclo Cross stars were in action over the weekend. On Saturday Kirby Bennett from Hinckley finished second in the 50+ race at Bingham, and first over 55 rider. Team mate Peter Busby had a mechanical problem half way through the race and eventually finished in fourth place.

Finn Mansfield and his Sister Lotta Mansfield both member of the MI Racing Youth Academy, won their races at the same meeting.

Then on Sunday morning Peter Busby finished second in the Veteran 50+ race at Grantham, Lincs.

On Friday, November 4, team boss Mick Ives will be organising the club’s dinner and awards evening at Dunchurch Park Hotel. Chief guest will be an ex-World number 1 rider, Olympic and World Champion. Over 90 diners are expected to attend.
