The introduction from the bench of strikers Jordan Wilson and David Kolodynski on 70 minutes proved to be the difference, with Wilson notching his first goal for the club a minute later when he finished off a Dan Summerfield cross, before Kolodynski tapped home Wilson's squared ball in added-time.

And Adams said: “I think we pretty much controlled the game from start to finish and got our reward in the end.

"It's great to be able to have such quality in reserve and then use this to good effect.

"We know we have a few selection headaches now and that's a good position to be in because it means the results are what we want and the individuals players are performing at the levels we are asking of them."

The latest win extended Town's unbeaten start to their UCL campaign to nine matches, which meant it is now the club's best ever start to a league season in its 66 year history – beating previous eight-match runs in 1966 and 2010.

Rugby will be looking to make it 10 this Saturday when Histon visit Butlin Road in the first of three consecutive weekend home fixtures for them.

Coventry Sphinx and Oadby follow the Cambridgeshire club in the final two Saturdays of the month, with Adams understandably happy with the state of play at the moment after the Wellingborough win saw them move to the summit – two points clear of Newport Pagnell with a game in hand.

Adams concluded: "It's fair to say that everything so far is going to plan.

"We had an encouraging run in the FA Cup and we've come through a testing opening set of league fixtures – especially away from home – in good shape, with six clean sheets in there too.

"We know we can't afford to lose focus now and we need to maintain the high standards that we have set ourselves so far.

"In the past we have occasionally struggled against the so-called lesser teams, but I believe we have a different squad and a different mentality now."
