Brakes add cover

BRAKES manager Paul Holleran is keeping his fingers crossed he can unleash new signing Lee Chilton on Swindon Supermarine tomorrow.

The left-sided midfielder was denied his Leamington debut last weekend when the match at Bedford was called off due to a frozen pitch.

And with tomorrow’s home clash against Swindon already in severe doubt, the former Halesowen Town favourite may have to wait until the trip to leaders Brackley on February 18 to get his first run-out in Leamington colours.

The club are making every effort to get tomorrow’s game against the Southern Premier League’s bottom club on, with fleece covers having been laid over the New Windmill pitch on Tuesday to protect it from the frost.

However, overnight snow has further complicated matters.

“We’re doing everything we can,” said Holleran.

“We could do with the temperature rising, but we’re due a thaw.

“Fingers crossed, it will be on, because I’d love to get back in action.”

Despite the uncertainty, Holleran is delighted with the addition of Chilton, who he believes will provide the attacking spark which has been lacking since Christmas.

“It’s not the first time I’ve tried to sign him, but he’s been loyal to [Halesowen manager] Shaun Cunnington and I understand that.

“There’s a real lack of wide men about and it’s a bit of a gamble as it’s been a while since he’s played at this level.

“But he’ll add a different dimension.

“He’s an attacking player, a direct player and he’ll get you a goal.”

Holleran has also added goalkeeping cover for Nathan Vaughan with the addition of Lewis Fenney.

Goalkeeper Lee Evans remains a registered Brakes player despite currently turning out for his local side Walsall Wood in the Midland Combination Premier Division.

However, the Leamington boss believes 18-year-old Fenney will provide excellent cover for first-choice Vaughan.

“Lewis Fenney has a good pedigree for a young lad having previously been at Cheltenham Town and Cambridge United,” he said.

“He has also signed forms for Rushall Olympic in the Evo-Stik Northern and I am looking at him to provide competition for Nathan Vaughan.”

Arthur Byrne, meanwhile, has signed for Racing Club Warwick, where he is expected to go straight in as their number one.

“Lee Knight knew of him and it’s just what Arthur needs,” said Holleran. “Hopefully he’ll be able to step up to the mark.”
