Brakes bring in Pierpoint after the loss of Daly and Breeden

Leamington boss Paul Holleran says he was forced to act quickly to secure the signing of Solihull Moors centre-back Stuart Pierpoint after the “bombshell” of Liam Daly’s move the other way.

The lure of substantially improved personal terms prompted Daly’s decision, with Supporters’ Player of the Year Tony Breeden also opting to make the switch to Damson Park.

The loss of his keeper and the 2013/14 Player of the Year has undoubtedly left a massive void but Holleran believes he is half way to filling it with the arrival of former Nuneaton and Stafford Rangers defender Pierpoint, 30.

“With Liam and Tony’s bombshell we had to move quickly,” said Holleran.

“Stuart is a player we were looking at prior to Liam going.

“I signed him ten years ago [for Halesowen] and he’s had a good non-league career - he’s a good, experienced professional.

“He was offered a deal by Solihull but he decided it was time for a change.”

While a strict wage structure meant Leamington were reluctant to try and match the financial package offered by Solihull, Holleran has been given the go-ahead to secure players on contracts for the 2014/15 season.

Leading goalscorer Danny Newton seems likely to become the first of those after committing to the club on Tuesday, while Joe Magunda has also agreed to return.

Talks are still ongoing with several members of last season’s squad, but Holleran admits there will need to be more new arrivals if they are to build on last season’s mid-table finish.

“We’ve had a good look at the Conference North now and we need players we are confident can deal with it.

“There will be a few more additions and hopefully when we come back for pre-season we’ll be in a decent position.

“The league was strong last year but next season it will be even stronger and we need to be a strong as we possibly can to make sure we compete.”

Breeden’s final act as a Brakes player was to pick up the Supporters’ Player of the Year award at the presentation night last Friday.

Daly’s centre-back partner James Mace won the Players’ Player of the Year award, with Magunda getting the nod from the manager.
