Derby defeat leaves Racing Club staring relegation in the face

Racing Club Warwick’s Midland Combination Premier Division status hangs in the balance after defeat at home to Southam United on Wednesday night.

The 2-0 derby loss, courtesy of a Simeon Smith brace, left them three points adrift at the foot of the table with just six matches to play.

Privately the club remain optimistic they will preserve their top-flight status even if they do finish bottom for the second time in three seasons.

The leading two in Division One - Alvis and Cadbury Athletic - both lack floodlights and would be subject to strict criteria to make the step up.

However, league chairman Peter Scanlon said he could offer Racing Club no guarantees.

“[Racing Club’s fate will be] judged on its merits at the end of the season, on what other clubs have to offer and the numbers in the league.

“If they finish bottom there is a possibility they could be relegated.”

Racing Club vice-chairman Andy Cowlard admitted relegation would be a blow, but said it was important that the club put in a strong foundation for future prosperity.

“We’re starting again, streamlining everything and bringing in young lads,” said Cowlard.

“If we go down, obviously we’ll be upset, but that’s life.

“We’re happy with the coaching staff and the players are young and will come good eventually.”
