Woodlands needed to win to guarantee them the league title but they came up against a highly motivated home side fighting for a top four finish.

The visitors took an early lead when a long ball caught the Whitnash back four on the back foot and the visitors’ centre forward nipped in with a smart finish at the near post.

Whitnash were soon level through the pacey Ryan Harris who got on the end of a Neil Stacey free kick ahead of the advancing Woodlands’ keeper to lob a header into the empty net from 18 yards out.

The winner came for Whitnash on 28 minutes when Kev McGarvey’s free kick found former Birmingham City player Simon Rea who bravely headed home before he was taken off after suffering a blow to the head in the process.

Solid defensive play by the back four, smart saves from young keeper Michael Moreton and tireless work from the midfield trio allowed Whitnash to see off Woodlands’ threat in the second half and Harris was unlucky not to add to his tally at the other end.

Manager Robbie Harris (pictured) who has guided Whitnash from Division 5 to the Premier Division and also overseen five from six cup final wins in the past seven seasons is now moving aside to be club chairman.

Former players Marc Friend, Simon Rea and Keith Orme will be first team manager and first team coaches respectively .
