Saints had the perfect start when Joss Holford scored a goal straight out of the David Beckham scrapbook after just five seconds.

Simeon Smith touched the kick-off to strike partner Holford who, seeing Jack Hartopp on his six-yard line, launched a long-range shot that sailed over the back-pedalling keeper and into the net.

Holford turned provider in the 22nd minute, flicking the ball on to Smith, who coolly finished to double Saints’ lead.

It was 3-0 on the hour as, following continued Saints pressure, the ball came out of the visitors’ defence to Tom Muldoon, who controlled it and thumped home a left-foot drive off the far post.

Southam netted their fourth after great control by Holford, who carefully flicked the ball on for Smith to sprint into the box and shoot home into the far corner.

Oli Manoochehri completed the nap hand after taking possession on the byeline, feigning one way and striding away from goal before twisting sharply to fire across Hartopp.

The game ended with a penalty for Alvis and, in keeping with their afternoon, Steve Evans blazed it over the angle.

Saints are again in cup action tomorrow when they host Littleton in the Les James Memorial Challenge Cup (3pm).
