Kenilworth Town pull out of Midland League days before kick-off

The Division Two side made the decision just days before the season was due to get under way, with club secretary Steve Skrzeczkowski citing spiralling costs and players’ demands for payment for their withdrawal.

“It just wasn’t beneficial to the club with the expense that goes into it,” said Skrzeczkowski.

“The league costs a lot of money and it’s just not viable.

“There wasn’t a lot of interest from players, plus a lot of clubs are offering them money.”

However, he said the demise of the Saturday side would not mean the end of the club, which boasts an over-35s side, Sunday team, women’s team and thriving youth section.

And he did not rule out a return to the Midland League in the future for the 2013/14 Midland Combination Division Two champions.

“From a club point of view, we’re still fighting.

“It opens up a more opportunities to get the younger kids involved.

“It’s a struggle, but we’ll keep going.”
