Knight already has one eye on Southam

Lee Knight doesn’t expect Racing Club to return to action until the new year.

Following on from Saturday’s blanket postponement of Midland Combination fixtures, Racers are due to return to league action on Monday with a visit to Alveston (11.30am).

However, with little sign of the snow disappearing, player-manager Knight is already turning his attentions to the home derby clash with Southam on Monday January 3.

“If you’ve got the top teams in the Premiership not playing, we’ve got no chance,” said Knight.

“I just hope the league agrees to extend the season.”

In common with most managers around the region, Knight is struggling to find alternative training venues for his squad, admitting that even when he does, there are still problems to overcome.

“It is difficult to train. You’re asking people to commute from Birmingham and it’s a difficult task to get people to come in and train for an hour.

“We had to cancel two sessions last week because we had eight of the team who played at Nuneaton Griff out with illness.

“At times like these, you’ve just got have to faith in the lads to go down the gym or go out for a jog and look after themselves.”

Knight is keeping his fingers crossed the bank holiday fixture at home to Saints beats the freeze, with a bumper crowd expected at Townsend Meadow for the noon kick-off.

After bowing out of the Birmingham County Midweek Floodlit Cup at the hands of Southam in November, Knight says it will be a much-changed line-up which faces Lee Fogarty’s side this time around.

“We’ve hardly any players left from the side that lost 3-2 to Southam, such has been the turnaround of players.

“I’d love to have played them the week after we beat Pelsall.

“But after this long a break the momentum has been lost and everyone is a bit gutted to have had this period off.”

Knight is hoping to add a further new face to his side, with Kyle Byrne linking up with the club for training last night.

Former Sutton Coldfield midfielder Byrne was at the Birmingham City Academy with Racing Club captain Dean Curtis.
