Last-gasp wins show Brakes are adapting to higher level

Leamington secured successive Skrill North wins for the first time this season with a solitary Craig Owen strike enough to see off visitors Stalybridge Celtic.

It meant back-to-back injury-time winners for Brakes and a welcome change in fortunes after being on the receiving end of last-gasp clinchers four times this season.

And assistant manager Liam O’Neill said the turnaround emphasised the fine margins between winning and losing in the Conference.

“Last year a lot of teams buckled against us and you could afford a drop in concentration, but this season they keep grafting away.

“Games aren’t over until the 93rd or 94th minute and in the latter stages of games you wonder, do you stick or twist.

“The games we have lost, we’ve been up there trying to get a winner and in hindsight we’d probably have been better sticking.

“Every single point is crucial and those four points would have put a different complexion on our league position. But it’s a learning curve for all of us.”

Brakes face Stalybridge again tomorrow at Bower Fold, with O’Neill hopeful Stefan Moore can play some part after returning to training in midweek.
