Leaders can find no way past resolute Hibs

Player-coach Rich Kay was a happy man after Leamington Hibs held Midlands Combination Division Two leaders Paget Rangers to a goalless draw.

Despite the lack of goals, both sides contributed to a lively first half with Ryan Macbeth racing clear only to lift his shot over the bar and Paget wasting an equally clear-cut chance when their striker spooned the ball over from six yards.

A fine last-ditch tackle from Ash Knight then prevented Paget opening the scoring.

Hibs started the second half brightly with Adam Edwards firing straight at the keeper when well placed and Filippo Mannina hitting the post.

Paget were also a danger on the counter, but it was the visiting Hibs side who had the clearest chances to win it in the closing stages with Rich Heath pulling a shot wide from eight yards and Calum Yeates wasting a one-on-one.

“It was an excellent game of football which was end to end from the first minute,” said Kay.

“Paget score for fun at home but we have one of, if not the best, defensive record in the league which made for a great watch and a great advert for MidComb Two.

“Both sides probably feel they could have won it and both sides created clear goalscoring chances in what was a very entertaining 0-0.

“That’s six clean sheets this season, unbeaten in seven league games and we haven’t lost to any team in the top six, which bodes well.

“We now need to go on a winning run in the next few fixtures and that will put us right in the mix.”
