Leamington Hydros’ players will reunite to pay tribute to manager Colin

FORMER players from a successful Sunday league football team will pay tribute to their late manager in a fundraising match this month.

Colin Timms managed Leamington Hydros in the early 1980s, leading the Rugby Youth League side to a league and cup double.

Mr Timms, who lived in Fallow Hill, Sydenham, died of lung cancer aged 62 almost two years ago and his family have organised the match to raise money for the Aylesford Unit at Warwick Hospital where he received care.

His daughters Michelle and Sarah said: “We wanted to do something for the Macmillan Nurses because they were really good with him and it is our way of giving something back.

“It will keep dad’s memory alive - he lived and died by football it was all he ever knew.”

Mr Timms managed Hydros from under-15 to under-18 level while his wife Wendy was the team secretary.

Taking their name from the Integrated Hydraulics factory, the team had their sponsor to thank for a footballing trip to Belgium.

Away from the field Mr Timms was also a friend to his players, watching football with them and showing them videos of their matches.

Mrs Timms said: “He loved the game and having the boys round to talk about football.

“He was also a very good dad and a good husband.”

Michelle added: “He was always there to listen and if you ever had a problem he would always say the decision was yours but he would be there for you.”

To mark Mr Timms’ lifelong support of Liverpool FC, his family wore the team’s red shirt to his funeral and the club’s anthem You’ll Never Walk Alone was also played.

Members of Mr Timms’ Hydros side will take on the former manager’s family and friends in the match at Campion School in Sydenham Drive on Saturday July 23 from 1.30pm.

A presentation event will also take place at the Sydenham Club in Chesterton Drive from 7.30pm.

The match was the idea of Mr Timms’ grandsons Sam, Reece and Callum and his youngest grandson Luca, two, and his granddaughters Cerys and Lauren will kick-off the event.

Ticket sales for the presentation evening, along with proceeds from a raffle and donations, will be presented by cheque to a Macmillan Nurse on the night.

The family are also looking for a DJ to provide entertainment.
