Mike’s a goal-den oldie

Mike Green’s 200th Heart of England goal helped his side to a 2-1 Challenge Cup third-round win over plucky Heathcote Athletic.

The 37-year-old, who has led the line for the Kenilworth-based club for 11 seasons, said he has had his eye on the double century ever since notching up his 100th goal.

However, he admitted reaching the milestone was a bit of an anti-climax. “I had a celebration ready. We were going to throw ourselves into the back of the net as we’re nicknamed The Salmons.

“But I suffered a two-footed lunge and didn’t see the shot bobble in - I was appealing for a penalty.”

The striker says the years are beginning to catch up with him, with his body taking longer and longer to recover from the rigours of 90 minutes.

The tiredness meant he even failed to mark his 200th goal with a decent celebration after the game. That might now have to wait until the summer when he brings the curtain down on his Sunday League career.

“I am thinking of retiring at the end of the season and it is a nice way for me to end it.”
