Old faces enjoy cup double as Town’s new face shines

Kenilworth Town’s double-header at Gypsy Lane provided a feast of goals for the watching former players and two wins out of two for the host club.

The reserves kicked off proceedings with 5-2 victory over Shipston Excelsior Colts in the RM Smith Cup, with Matt Sewell (2) Jan Wara (penalty), Gio Bucci and Harry Stroud on target.

Town had to come from a goal down to secure their progress and Sewell said the win would help instil confidence in a side which has made an indifferent start to the campaign.

“Too often when we’ve gone behind this season we’ve been out of the game,” said Sewell.

“Today we battled back after being behind twice, the first time we’ve overturned a deficit.

“Vlad Polak did really well in midfield and Gio Bucci was outstanding up front.

“We now need to look to build on this and get some good results in the league.”

The first team then made it two wins from two for new manager Kev Kingham with a comprehensive 4-0 defeat of FISSC Reserves, also in the RM Smith Cup.

Debutant Shane Brassington showed his quality with a neat turn and shot to open the scoring before Adam Edwards doubled Town’s lead.

Matt Lendon added a third after the break, with Nick Ford using his pace to good effect to wrap up the scoring.

And, after continuing his 100 per cent start, Kingham’s only disappointment was that the scoreline was not more emphatic.

“It was a good win for us,” said Kingham. “We looked very good and kept the ball well.

“Shane Brassington and Adam Edwards look a very exciting partnership, while Matty Lendon and Joe Graham took control of the game from early on in the centre of midfield.

“Nick Ford was again impressive and the only negative point was that we didn’t score more.

“We had chances we couldn’t convert, but then it was a 4-0 win so I’m happy.”

Town have also received some good news off the pitch after signing a kit sponsorship deal with Claverdon-based Protech Developments UK Limited.

Town will give their new strip its first airing tomorrow when they travel to Studley in the Stratford Alliance Premier Division.

Other sponsorship opportunities are still available at the club, while Town are also looking for people to get involved on match days.
