Racers are undone by defensive lapses

Racing Club Warwick boss Curly O’Callaghan cut a frustrated figure after seeing his side slump to a 5-0 defeat at Stafford Town last Saturday.

Central midfield duo Alex Unitt and Liam Givins both cried off only hours before the fixture to disrupt O’Callaghan’s plans and, despite a promising opening from the visitors, they were once again undone by defensive lapses.

“They weren’t five goals better than us,” said O’Callaghan. “But they’re a decent side, a top six side - one of the best we’ve played this season.

“For 30 minutes we battered them. Then we didn’t deal with a cross and it’s 1-0.

“It’s the same old story. We said don’t give silly free-kicks away because they’re a big side.”

“Then we get nervous and don’t deal with a corner and it’s 2-0 straight after and game over.”

The defeat, Racing Club’s seventh in their last eight league outings, leaves them floundering near the foot of the Midland Combination Premier.

And having had 12 games to assess his new charges, O’Callaghan has been forced to readjust his aims for the campaign.

He said: “There’s going to be two leagues, a top ten and and a bottom half and if we get to half-way it will have been a good season.”

Racing Club travel to Bromsgrove Sporting tomorrow (3pm) aiming to complete a quickfire double having beaten the Worcestershire side 2-1 in August.
