Racers-Saints derby washed out

Racing Club Warwick’s Boxing Day fixture at home to Southam United fell victim to the weather, with officials calling off the match on the Monday.

Persistent rain had left patches of standing water, with vice-chairman Andy Cowlard describing it as “the worst he has seen it”.

Kenilworth’s home clash with Leamington Hibs in the Midland Combination Division Two was also a casualty.

The whole of the Athium Midland Football Combination programme was wiped out last Saturday, leaving Southam United without a match for the second week running.

Saints had been due to play high-flying Nuneaton Griff at The Pingles in the quarter-final of the Les James Memorial Challenge Cup.

Because of the weather, Lee Knibbs’ team played just one match in the whole of November and three in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

As well as being involved in four cup competitions, they still have 20 league matches remaining, having not completed a fixture since winning 3-1 at Pilkington XXX on October 31.
