Lee Knight remains upbeat despite seeing Racers succumb to their ninth Midland Combination defeat in ten at Dales Lane.

A 75th-minute penalty sealed victory for the home side, whose 14th-minute opener was their only shot from open play over the 90 minutes.

Dean Curtis brought the visitors back on level terms, also from the spot, but it was a lack of composure in front of goal which proved costly for Racers, with Knight bemoaning “seven or eight good chances” which were spurned.

“I couldn’t ask any more of the players to be fair,” said Knight. “Even their manager admitted he would have been happy with the draw.

“We’ve dominated but we just couldn’t score. We should have been two up within 20 minutes but didn’t take our chances.”

With games running out and an eight-point gap to second-bottom Alveston, the table makes grim reading.

However, Knight still believes his side can lift themselves off the bottom.

“We’ve got two home games coming up and we’ve just got to get on with it,” said Knight, whose side entertain Pilkington XXX tomorrow.

“If I can name the same side for the next four or five games, we’ll be OK.”
