Samba School shortlisted for national award

Brazilian soccer school coach Nilio Bagga was shortlisted for two awards at the inaugural Asian Football Awards (AFA), which were held at Wembley Stadium on Wednesday.

The awards have been established to raise an awareness and development of Asians in football.

Bagga, from Kenilworth, was shortlisted for both the coach of the year award and the football development project of the year award for the work of his Samba Soccer Schools which operate across the West Midlands area, running after-school, summer and winter football camps for five to 16-year-olds in Coventry, Leamington, Kenilworth and Warwick.

Samba Soccer Schools specialise in teaching budding young footballers to play football with the creative flair characteristic of the Brazilian game, but also work to build the confidence and teamwork skills of the young players.

And despite failing to pick up any awards on the evening, Samba Soccer Schools head coach Bagga said it was an honour to be shortlisted for both awards.

“Despite not winning an award on the night, it was nonetheless fantastic to have the work of Samba Soccer recognised in this way,” said Bagga.

“The AFA awards are an important step in having the contribution of Asian coaches, players and administrative staff to our national sport recognised.”
