Organisers are looking for a team to represent Leamington in the UK’s official six-a-side Premier League, known as 6PL, which kicks off in May.

Leamington are one of ten teams who will make up the Central section, with matches taking place on Sunday afternoons.

The top five teams from the North, Central, South and Wales regional leagues will be promoted to form the inaugural six-a-side Premier League.

“The six-a-side form of the game is now more popular than traditional 11-a-side football in terms of participant numbers,” said 6PL’s chief executive Paul Spacey.

“Our aim is to give players a fantastic league experience but also more opportunity to appear in the national media spotlight, something which isn’t really possible playing in community six-a-side or local level 11-a-side leagues.”

6PL general secretary Claire Elizabeth hopes the league system will capture the imagination of the public and eventually receive the support and involvement of semi-professional and even professional clubs.

She said: “It is an ambitious but ultimately very exciting project which has the potential to be hugely popular among players and fans.

“Leamington will certainly enjoy some healthy local rivalry with Nuneaton, Tamworth and Coventry also among the places having a representative team.”
