Silverware is now a priority for Racers

RACING Club Warwick make a long awaited return to action tomorrow when they travel to Bloxwich United in the quarter-final of the Les James Challenge Cup.

Having failed to apply for any fixtures over the festive period, Racers saw their only scheduled game, at Bartley Green, postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.

It means Lee Knight’s side have been without a competitive fixture since the 6-3 thrashing of Stockingford in the Coventry Charity Cup on December 10.

Of more concern, however, is the amount of games they are falling behind the rest of the Midland Combination Premier, with Racing Club already holding five games in hand on Castle Vale JKS, who lie one place below them.

Racers entered six cup competitions at the start of the campaign and remain in three of them - the Birmingham County Cup, the Coventry Charity Cup and the Les James Challenge Cup.

Victory over Bloxwich will only exacerbate the fixture pile-up, but with Racers languishing in the bottom half of the Midland Combination Premier, Knight says the cups now take precedent.

“If we win a couple of cups and finish in the top half of the table, we’ll be happy,” said Knight, who has overseen just four defeats in his last 20 games in charge.

“We’d like to have finished top six, but there are just going to be too many games to make up.”

Despite their inactivity, Racing Club did manage to arrange a match against Sutton Coldfield on their 3G pitch, which Knight admitted was “a good blowout”.

Knight will be without Craig Thomas and Ricardo Richards tomorrow through suspension, but otherwise expects to have a full squad to choose from.
