Sorry Easter means Southam must come back from the dead

Despite a spirited second half fightback, Pawel Tomczak’s early own goal consigned Southam to their second defeat of the Easter weekend, going down 1-0 at Stafford Town on Monday, writes David Hucker.

Ollie Manuel had to make a smart save to deny Paul McMahon in only the third minute but he was powerless to stop Stafford taking the lead 60 seconds later when, from a corner on the left, Tomczak headed into his own net.

As Saints probed for an equaliser, Marc Passey was wide with an effort from the edge of the box and Simeon Smith’s shot looked to be handled inside the area, but no penalty was given.

Tom Leaver was denied by a fingertip save by Richard Stone in the 64th minute and the home keeper then saved at the feet of Smith to thwart Saints again.

Lee Knibbs’ team have a mountain to climb to reach the Les James Memorial Challenge Cup final after going down 3-0 to Walsall Wood in Saturday’s first leg.

Saints came close to scoring when Casey Gaggini’s 39th minute free-kick from the edge of the area came back off the post.

But it was Wood who got the breakthrough in the 52nd minute when Manuel was unable to keep out Danny Forrest’s shot from the edge of the area.

With five minutes remaining, Bilgimer gave Manuel no chance with a cracking shot and substitute Corey Currithers put the result beyond doubt in added time when leaving two defenders in his wake to score with a deflected strike.
