Yeates grabs late equaliser for Leamington Hibs

Leamington Hibs salvaged a point from a game ruined by a strong wind, with Andy Yeates’ 85th-minute goal earning them a 2-2 draw at home to Burntwood in the Midland Combination Division Two.

Hibs started brightly with a couple of shots on goal before Burntwood scored with their first attack, a tame shot finding its way into the corner.

The home side hit back with Adam Edwards rounding the keeper to slot home the equaliser and a dominant Hibs spurned an indirect free-kick inside the box, while Matty Trinder wastefully headed wide from six yards out.

Burntwood barely had an attack for the majority of the second half, with only two long punts forwards threatening the Hibs defence.

The first was put wide by the forward but the hosts did not learn their lesson and, with 20 minutes to go, another long ball was initially mis-kicked by the Burntwood forward before he squared it for his unmarked strike partner to tap in.

Hibs committed men forward and Yeates scored from close range with five minutes remaining.

There was still time for Hibs to win the game, but Ryan Woodward blazed wide after being set up by Edwards.

Player-coach Rich Kay admitted the elements had contributed to a forgettable encounter but believed Hibs had done enough to win the game.

“When the wind is so strong its a struggle with it at your backs as the ball gets away from you and running up the hill second half was like running into a brick wall,” said Kay.

“Having said that, the game should have been dead and buried at half-time but again our finishing was wild in and around the box.”
