Former Kenilworth star is world champion

Former Kenilworth Tennis, Squash and Croquet member Rachel Rowe was crowned world champion at the Women’s World Golf Croquet championships in New Zealand.

Rowe, who now works in Nottingham, was a member of the Crackley Lane club during her three years at Warwick University and improved steadily throughout that time.

In the finals, played over eight days in the Bay of Plenty, Rowe won 22 of her 24 games in the block stages and then the knock-out rounds.

In the best-of-five-games final, she met the much more experienced Jenny Clarke on her home soil.

Rowe won the first game 7-3 and was 4-0 up in the second, but Clarke came back to win 7-6 and then took the next 7-5.

Another tight duel in the fourth resulted in a 7-6 victory to the England player and a 7-5 win in the decider gave Rowe the title.
