Froggatt skips comfortable win to tip balance in women’s favour

Warwick Boat Club’s ladies claimed the bragging rights with a second successive victory over the men in their biannual fixture.

The men won two of the the three rinks through Barry Golding and Ron Greensmith.

However, a nine-shot victory for skip Barbara Froggatt, Vivienne Griffin and Chris Lewis secured a 53-48 success for the women.

Boat Club’s mixed team suffered defeats in two matches restricted to 15 ends, with Stratford Police and Pottertons claiming victories by seven and 12 shots, respectively.

Royal Leamington Spa’s Donna Kerr has enjoyed a fine start to the new season, leading her rinks to emphatic wins in both her opening two matches.

However, despite a 20-15 success inthe opener at Stoke (Coventry) and a slender one-shot win for Jean Smithard, a 28-11 reverse for Cynthia Briggs saw Spa go down 58-47.

They bounced back to beat Bilton with Kerr’s 26-8 romp and a 26-11 success for Elizabeth G Jones lifting Spa to a 65-40 victory.

Spa’s men, meanwhile, were beaten 91-81 by visitors Welford in a five-rink triples.

Bill Edkins (17-13) and Malcolm Wickens (18-7) both secured rinks wins, while Peter Higgins claimed a 21-21 draw.

Warwickshire Vice-Presidents BA had little to cheer despite the fine weather at Entaco BC on Sunday as they were overwhelmed 130-76 by their Oxfordshire counterparts. Four of the five rinks were lost, with Roy Swift’s 19-19 draw providing the only ray of sunshine.

Lillington also came off distinctly second best at Rugby, with Dennis Lee (22-13) skipping their only success in a 138-87 defeat.

An emphatic 140-76 victory over Corley was the highlight of WCC Staff’s opening week, Bala Manniam (21-15), Barry Grant (31-17), George Barber (16-14), Hilary Hickman (32-6) and Bode Brown (28-7) with the rink wins.
