Fun day follows Red Red Wine

There is a mix of racing and music at Warwick on Tuesday as former UB40 singer Ali Campbell and his band perform after racing at the last of the course’s evening meetings for 2012, writes David Hucker.

After a summer that has seen the wettest June on record and the coldest July since 2000, officials will be praying for a sunny end to August as they plan for next week’s meeting and the Bank Holiday Family Fun Day on Monday 27.

A big crowd is expected on Tuesday for which the first race, the Entertain Clients At Warwick Racecourse Apprentice Handicap over six furlongs, gets underway at 5pm.

The two highest class races of the evening are the fifth, the Racing UK Nursery over six furlongs, and the following Dine In The 1707 Restaurant Handicap over an extended one-and-a-quarter miles.

But the most interesting could be the Class 5 British Stallion Studs Supporting British Racing EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes which, despite its low prize money, could attract runners from some of the big stables.

With Warwick being the only flat meeting of the evening, racegoers may get to see Ryan Moore and Richard Hughes, currently neck and neck in the race for the jockeys’ championship as they each look to steal a march in what is becoming a fascinating contest.

With the glass-fronted 1707 Restaurant nearly sold out, the course has opened a second dining room with private viewing area in the Warwickshire Suite, located at the top of the main grandstand.
